This is the common yew with which most people are familiar with. It will grow up to 15m (45ft) in height as a tree but is easily managed and maintained at a much lower height by clipping.

Height: about 60cm.

General comments: The Yew is a versatile, slow growing tree. It can be grown as a specimen, shaped by topiary or used for a hedge, depending on the variety chosen. The dark needle variety is the best known.

The female of the species produces red berries which must not be eaten as all parts of the yew are poisonous. The yew is an evergreen and does not like poorly drained soil.
